Broadcom’s Samueli Giving Away Billions
Henry Samueli, one of the founders of Broadcom–which was founded in Irvine–has pledged to give away most of his wealth during his lifetime. According to the IEEE Spectrum, which profiled Samueli’s philanthropy efforts, Samueli–worth more than $6 billion–is doing that through donations to UCLA, UC Irvine, and many other efforts, including the Samueli Academy, in Santa Ana, a public charter school is for middle school and high school students. Samueli’s co-founder, Henry T. Nicholas, III, has taken quite a different turn with his fortune, having narrowly avoided jail in 2019 on drug charges, and infamously faced allegations of building a “secret lair for sex, drugs” under his mansion, according to the LA Times.
